Do you think public schools need more money? Why?

Public schools guide young kids and teenagers to a successful future, and the vast majority of kids and teenagers go to these schools. Throughout a student's school career, they learn many things that will benefit them in their adult life, all taught by various teachers. However, many public schools are underfunded, leading them to have lesser learning resources. How can schools lead us to a better life when they lack the resources necessary to do so? I believe that public schools need more money, which can be used to improve overall school quality and fund teachers. Adequate school funding can allow schools to raise teacher pay, provide better learning opportunities, and upgrade facilities. This can enhance the quality of education and provide students with a better chance to succeed in their future careers.

Teachers have the most important and demanding role in schools, being a major stepping stone in many kids' lives. Despite the importance of this job, many public school teachers go severely underpaid, with an average yearly salary of $65,090 in the U.S. (USA Facts). While I am not saying this salary is extremely low, this salary is on par with other jobs that require less experience and have fewer requirements, such as being a truck driver. Teachers are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in their subject, all to be paid less than someone that does possibly less work. On top of that, they have to deal with rowdy kids who make teaching them a hassle. How can you expect someone to do their job properly if they aren't paid enough to care or worry about actually teaching? With the amount of importance this job comes with, I believe teachers should have a higher salary. By funding schools and teachers, many students will get a better education and improve our society.

Poor-quality facilities and resources are another problem that comes with insufficient funding for schools. Having higher-quality materials that are accessible to students can benefit learning and potentially change the emotions related to school. According to a study done by Yale, nearly 75% of students in public schools had negative feelings towards school, relating to boredom or "falling behind" (Yale News). With the proper materials and resources, schools can help those students fall behind and also make school a more enjoyable place. This could include having better classrooms to make students feel welcome and comfortable or maybe hiring teachers or counselors to help students.

Despite all these benefits that could come out of having more public school funds, the decision to increase funding is a complex issue that doesn't only involve the issue of funding. It also involves various factors such as budget constraints, political priorities, and societal values. How will we make sure schools use the school funds properly, instead of using them for unnecessary or useless things? I know there are many other arguments that I could continue to discuss, but my point still stands. By funding public schools and improving the school setting for students and teachers, people will think more positively about schools and student learning will improve. All we can do is wait and see what the government will do, praying for a better educational world.

  1. I think this is really important to read as students especially to see how we treat our teachers and how they are compensated. Many teachers have to do many thing and put up with a lot of things they shouldn't. I think this issue is deeper than displayed in the blog though, especially with the question of where the money will come from. The tax system would have to get involved in this topic and so would politics, making this a lot more challenging to display. In conclusion though, this piece is very well and makes me more curious about this topic than I have been in the past.

  2. I think that this is a well put together blog. I agree that many public schools are underfunded, seeing for myself the struggles some teachers have such as not having motivation to teach. I have also seen that many teachers that love teaching no longer do it because they cannot support themselves on the money they get from teaching. Because of the other problems that an underfunded school system comes along with, and the teacher issue, I agree that public schools definitely need more money.

  3. I also believe that the funding of public schools should be more. I liked how you compared the average salary of teachers with other jobs that require little experience to make your argument stronger. I also liked how your wrapped up your conclusion.

  4. This is probably one of the biggest problems that go undervalued. Teachers often have to buy school supplies with their own money, and their salary can barely compensate for that. At this rate, it's not even the schools' fault because they also receive low funds all the time.

  5. I think this is a really interesting blog and I definitely agree! It's a big issue in a lot of public schools. As someone from a small town, another thing I would connect this to is a lack of class selection. Many small, rural schools do not have the staff or the funding to provide certain classes like more than one foreign languages and calculus. Great blog!

  6. I heard a lot of people do not like the American Education system. A point that you made about the teachers getting paid more would solve this issue because they would be more passionate about teaching. Also I noticed that Uni during the beginning of the year used funding on some questionable expenses like Charter Buses which was nice, but in the long run was not worth the money.

  7. This is a very good point! My blog post was related to college being free, and they are strongly related. You make a very good point about funding, because if more money is given to public schools, they will be able to provide an enjoyable education and for everyone who needs/wants it. You made a lot of good points and supported them well!

  8. I believe this is true. If teachers are paid more then they can be more qualified to teach which is important. Schools need funding to improve.

  9. I agree that if teachers were paid more, they would love teaching more, and schools would have greater resources, which would encourage students to learn more and stay in school. I like the facts you provided relating average teacher salaries and students who are not interested in staying in school. It really strengthed your blog. Good work!
