Spoiler Warning!
In this book there are 2 major stories being told. The first is about a boy named Hanson Alister and his struggle on the way to and at Oden’s Ford to become a wizard. The second is of the princess Raisa and her problems getting to Oden’s Ford and her problems there. The setting of the book starts off in the Queendom of the fells and then later translates to the warring kingdom of Arden and at Oden’s Ford. A major problem to both Raisa and Han is the Bayar's family. The Bayar's want Han because he stole their amulet. Raisa is wanted by them so that they can force her into a marriage. The Bayar, Han, and Raisa are all attending Oden’s Ford which causes chaos for both Han and Raisa.
The book emphasizes actions having consequences. This especially true for the character Han. In most cases the problems Han and his friends face throughout the book is because of Hanson previous actions. An example of this is the struggle Han faces when traveling to Oden’s Ford. What would have happened if he didn’t steal the amulet? Or if he thought about his mysterious tutor’s real intentions.
In both of these cases Han actions lead to severe consequences. The Brayers are know to be one of the most powerful wizarding families in Fells. And the Amulet is consider a priceless artifact. The Brayers family wouldn't let this go noticed. But Hanson ignores these dangers to get what he wants. And he still doesn't learn his lesson. Hanson again ignores the danger to get what he desires. Hanson makes a deal with a mysterious crow, without knowing all the conditions of the contract.
I recommend this book for several reasons, one of which is that it's part of a series so you can read more about Han and Raisa adventures. Another reason is that characters go to school like everyone else, so they are relatable. The second reason I recommend this book is that it is very descriptive, especially about new buildings, people, and other things.
